Root Canal
You got a tooth decay that’s gone from bad to worse? Has the decay almost killed the tooth? If yes, then you may be advised to go in for the root canal treatment.
Root canal treatment helps to save the tooth and restore functionality of the affected tooth. When you look at a tooth what you see – the white enamel – is the crown. What’s behind it is the pulp. The pulp forms the centre of a tooth. The work of the pulp is to provide nutrition to the tooth via blood vessel and give feeling to the tooth via nerves.
But when your tooth decay goes bad, the nerve of the tooth gets badly affected. A root canal treatment treats such decay and prevents the development of a painful infection in the pulp. Also, relieve you of tooth pain, stop infection and help healing.
The procedure begins only after local anaesthesia is administered. The dentist then separates the decayed tooth from the other tooth and with the use tools then remove the pulp from the tooth. The dentist now fills the inside part of the tooth below the gum with temporary filling materials and a final root canal filling. To restore aesthetic dental structure, the dentist uses a crown to make an impression of the tooth.
Post Root Canal Treatment
You will experience numbness in your lips and gums for a few hours until the anaesthesia wears off. A little while later, you may feel temporary pain that can be resolved by over-the-counter pain medication. And then in the natural course of time the healing will bring you a fine set of dental structure.
- Do not eat anything until the numbness in your mouth wears off.
- For time being, do not chew or bite on the tooth that has been treated.
- Place an ice pack over the area the procedure was done. This will help minimise the swelling.
- Continue to brush normally.
- Eat soft food at least or a few days.
- In case of pain and swelling, rinse three times a day with warm salt water. Add a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and then gently swish the water around the tooth and spit.
- Do not smoke for the first 24 hrs and if possible stop smoking until the healing process is completed.
